Matt Seely

I am an American painter and portrait artist who has found his home in Copenhagen, Denmark for the last 13 years. I received my Bachelors of Art from Western Washington University and went on to study classical figurative painting at the Art Students League of New York under Harvey Dinnerstein and Ronald Scherr. I combine my contemporary art education and classical skills to depict the world, the people around me, and express my inner world.

I founded and organize a monthly artist group called ‘Copenhagen Plein Air Painters’ where artists meet outdoors around Copenhagen and paint directly from life and share their work with each other.

In 2025 I started a Free ‘Pop-Up Portrait Project’ where I pop-up in random public locations in Copenhagen and draw free 3 minute portraits for anyone who wants to sit for me. I have found that making art in public of and for people brings joy and excitement to me and others and builds connection and community. So far I have drawn over 250 portraits and am just getting started!

I am currently focused on making larger studio pieces, smaller plein air pieces, and continuing my Pop-up Portrait project.

I also plan on having occasional shows and events at my studio: Studio Gallery 19D at Rentemestervej 19D in Nordvest Copenhagen. Follow me on Instagram(link in top or bottom corner) to hear about my future Pop-ups or events.

I am also available now for both commissions and doing quick portraits for private events and charities, so don’t be shy and drop me a message!
